My hot water heater is 3 years old. After 2 years the hot water smelled bad and lots of debris appeared in my air bath when I ran the blower. My plumber recently replaced the air bath. That didn’t solve the problem.

We drained and flushed the hot water heater for 2 hours. Tons of junk came out. Everything was fine for a week. Then the debris started to reappear in the tub. My plumber came back out and removed the anode rod which looked disgusting and replaced the heater element (I think that’s what he called it) which was very corroded. We are waiting for a new anode rod.

The air bath now has deep redish purple debris. It’s kind of a purple rust color. My plumber was ready to replace the hot water heater = the idea being that it was rusted out. That doesn’t make sense to me since there wasn’t any debris when we drained and flushed the heater 2 weeks ago.

What could be causing this? The new heating element? The missing rod? Do I have a new problem, possibly the pipes
